I watched a documentary called In The Realms of the Unreal. It’s a bizarre yet beautiful story of a simple man who worked as a janitor and was quiet and kept to himself but who lived in a world of his own in his apartment where he wrote an autobiography, a 15,000 page novel and created countless drawings and paintings to illustrate his novel. One of the women who knew him described him in the following sentence.
“If you’re poor, they call you crazy. If you’re rich, they call you eccentric.”
How true that is. We are much more likely to accept the odd behaviors of one who has money than we are of people who are simply weird and poor. I’d never heard it put in such simple terms defining eccentricity between classes. It’s something to think about.
